Overview

The International Institute for Restorative Practices (IIRP) is the global leader in providing education, training, and research regarding the science of relationships and community. While the Institute held a strong reputation within K-12 education, they sought to expand their footprint into new sectors, including higher education, organizational leadership, and social health sectors.

As the Senior Digital Art Director, I led the creative development of a comprehensive new brand platform and digital ecosystem. The project scope included defining a new brand identity and messaging strategy, creating a suite of digital marketing assets, and designing a modular website system in WordPress to help the IIRP bridge the gap between academic theory and public understanding.

The Challenge

The Terminology Barrier.

The primary obstacle was that "Restorative Practices" is an unfamiliar term to the general public. While potential students were actively searching for the outcomes of the program, such as conflict resolution and community building, they lacked the terminology to identify the IIRP as the solution.

Diluted Meaning.

Early insights revealed that the term "restorative" had become diluted and difficult to define in the marketplace. The challenge was to move the brand away from vague academic jargon and toward a clear, benefits-driven message that resonated with people looking to improve their personal and professional environments.

The Solution: Repositioning for Transformative Power

Our brand strategy team implemented a category-defining strategy that repositioned IIRP. The focus was shifted from simply stating what the IIRP is to emphasizing what the IIRP enables: the transformative power of restorative practices in communities.

Brand Platform & Identity

Identity Development

Our team established a Compassionate Leader persona, rooted in the fundamental promise to "teach humans how to successfully connect, coexist and care for each other." The visual execution prioritized the concept of connection through two primary elements: split-face photography, representing the link between the individual and their community, and a concentric circles graphic, which illustrated the outward radiation of real-world change.

The Foundational Concept

The central "Big Idea"—"Affecting Real Change"—was designed to bridge the gap between academic study and the universal human ambition to create a meaningful impact. A significant part of this was the cornerstone campaign line I developed, "Restoring the Future"  which resonated deeply with the client and was subsequently woven into all high-level strategic messaging and essential brand assets.

Digital Marketing Strategy

I designed creative assets for a full-funnel digital strategy aimed at high-intent audiences. Instead of focusing on technical jargon, the creative highlighted the outcomes of restorative practices through aspirational messaging like "Restoring the Future" and "Affecting Real Change." Campaigns were specifically targeted at users looking for conflict resolution solutions, guiding them directly toward IIRP’s graduate programs.

Website Experience & Component System

As Senior Digital Art Director, I directed the complete overhaul of the IIRP website and developed a modular component system for WordPress. This system ensured the new brand identity remained consistent across the entire digital ecosystem. By prioritizing UX, the homepage validates visitor intent with the headline: "You want to make a difference. Restorative practices will teach you how." The visual hierarchy and clear calls to action were designed to intuitively lead users toward Professional Development and Graduate Programs.

Before and After comparison

Project Conclusion

This strategic overhaul transitioned the IIRP’s messaging from academic concepts into an accessible, powerful narrative. By focusing on the benefits of "Affecting Real Change," we solidified IIRP’s position as a field leader and successfully increased awareness for their programs across new sectors.
